Custom Barn door design

Barndoor containers

The team at RPP Containers has over 20 years of expertise in the custom fabrication of bulk bins. Servicing a broad range of industries, the RPP team consistently listens to the needs of its diverse base of customers. Overwhelmingly, feedback indicated that extended-length parts that did not fit into standard size bins were the most challenging parts to package throughout the supply chain. RPP's  CustomBulk® division set out to address those pain points for its customers.

RPP Containers CustomBulk® division designs and builds a multitude of custom bulk containers for customers specific applications. One of our popular designs is the barn door bulk container, which is custom designed and built to accommodate a variety of customers' applications. Though our most common size has been the 45" x 48" x 50", we can scale containers like this to fit any dimensions requested.

We had a customer come to us requesting a container to move large boxes and miscellaneous items in their warehouse from point A to B. These items' weights ranged from 10 to 1,000lbs and variety of sizes. They also requested being able to move the container with a double pallet jack and 7.5 inches of space between the forks. Not the standard forklift or regular pallet jack options in many warehouses. The second request was to have one of the shorter sides completely open to allow easy access inside the container (barn door).

90x48x50 containers

With the challenge of modifying the 6" center foot, The RPP CustomBulk® team developed a family of unique custom base and fork strap configurations. Developing a cost-effective solution to adapt standard plastic bulk bins to accommodate narrow fork openings between 1-7". Order pickers have either single or double clamps and serrated edges that would otherwise damage plastic bases. Double pallet end rider equipment typically limits fork opening to 7.5", which is too narrow for use with the standard bulk bin base designs.

Our custom department constructed (10) DGC90x48x50-BD 6" C Foot for my customer. We used two DGR454850-2 fabricated together with one barn door on the short side, 6" center foot. These were the first set of containers to be sent out. See photos below.

Our customers did ask if modifications could be made to the container. There was slight pushing of the interior walls and barn doors (photos) from the products put inside the containers. Our custom department constructed a crossbar kit for these containers, which can be retrofitted out in the field. The 48" Cross kit, two spring hitch pins. This can be fitted across the 48" W side of the container and help secure the sides of the container and keep the weight from pushing the interior walls and barn doors out.

A simple solution

The customer wanted something easily removable, so they could load and unload the containers. We sent a total of 15 crossbar kits to our customers to have on hand. Very easy step by step to modify the (10) containers they already had on hand. With this new modification of the crossbar kit, they just placed another order for (5) DGC90x48x50-BD6" C Foot with an added removable crossbar.
