What is a Plastic Safe Box used for?
A customer recently came to us with an incredibly interesting project. They are a courier company that services many different locations but needs each of those location’s items to remain separate and secure in their own compartments. They would need to be able to access the interior of each container from the side and also be able to lock it up when done. Since these would be going in their own trucks, they would also need them to be custom sizes.
The first step was to find the correct sizes. These containers would need to fit in their own cargo vans and be the correct size for the safe boxes that would be contained within. After some measurements on their part and some design work on ours, we found a footprint that works for both of these needs while still remaining practical. For the height, we achieved that through a series of extension collars we keep on hand. These allow us to easily and cost-effectively create taller containers while maintaining structural integrity.
Once the correct size was achieved, we had to move on to how to access the interior from the side. A drop door wouldn’t be enough as they need to reach the entirety of the interior to reach multiple safe boxes inside. These safe boxes could range in size from container to container, so they needed full entry on a side to accommodate all the different combinations. To solve this, we replaced one of the walls with a barn door. With some piano hinges and a big saw, we could keep the cost down by simply turning the plastic wall into a barn door, avoiding metal and its volatile cost right now.
However, the barn door access created a new issue. They needed the containers to be securable. This kind of entry does the opposite of that. Having a big door instead of a wall could be a security risk. For this, we installed multiple locking points along the door. Now they could apply padlocks that only they had keys for. This would keep the container secure while still providing access to the entirety of the interior.
There was still one spot that needed to be secured; the top. Having lockable walls would mean nothing if someone could simply reach over the top. The customer also didn’t need ever to remove the lid either since all they were doing was accessing safe boxes from the side. By modifying one of our lids, we solved this problem. Mounting the lid permanently to the top created a roof to prevent anyone from going through the top. Cutting out a notch along the barn door side allows those doors to function properly without the lid interfering.
With these modifications, our custom department was able to create a solution for our customer’s issue. They would be able to have a container that fit their size specifications and reach all parts of the interior in a way that could be easily secured.
